It’s like ray-ee-ain on your wedding day

For those of you keeping track, I got a flat (on the bike) on Tuesday. I decided to go to Performance Bikes after work to spend some of the store credit on my customer loyalty card. After a day or two on the toe clips, I had realized that they’re a little too small, and, though I carry around a patch kit, it isn’t going to do me a lot of good without a tire pump. I got some “large” clips—the largest shoe size range claimed was 10+, and they’re just barely large enough,—a pump that clips along the tube next to the bottle cage and which makes a claim of easily inflating tires to 100psi and beyond, and, while I was spending fake money, a spare tube in order to cover a wider range of roadside disasters. Then I ran over a nail in the parking lot.

Nice. Are you trying to go through more tires than me?You should get some snow tires for your bike, btw.

I’d have to get new rims before snow tires. It looks like the smallest studded bike tires made are 35mm, which Sheldon Brown (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html) says would be a bad idea with my 14mm rim width. Supposedly Alexrims are cheap pieces of worthless crap, though, so maybe when they break I’ll look into whether I can get something a little wider. It looks like a 17mm is the compromise I’d need between snow tires and my current 25mm tires.

Speaking of toe clips, you should really try out the clipless pedals instead. The downside is you have to buy special pedals and special shoes, but you can usually get a pretty cheap deal on those from nashbar. However, think of how awesome you’ll look and feel with tiny little pedals on your bike and grinding metal sounds when you walk around. You also have the advantage of getting power from pulling up in the pedal stroke, though I guess you already get some of that with the toe clips. I’ve always hated how the toe clips were one sided, though, and the clipless pedals I have are the same on both sides so you don’t have to flip them over.- Chris Lumens
